Safe Trick-or-Treating Tips
- Accompany young children.
- Attach the name, address and telephone number of
children under age 12 to their clothes.
- Make sure your child knows her phone number and has
change for a call.
- Tell kids to travel only in familiar places and along
a pre-established route.
- Instruct children to never enter a home or an
apartment building unless with an adult.
- Set a time for children to return.
- Restrict trick-or-treating to homes with porch or
outside lights on.
- Remove breakable items or obstacles, like tools and
ladders, from your porch and lawn. Keep jack-o-lanterns away from a place
where costumes may brush against them.
- Tell children to bring treats home before eating for
inspection by an adult.
- Use face paint or cosmetics instead of masks, make
costumes so they don't drag on the ground, make sure hats don't slip over eyes
and have them wear shoes that fit to avoid falls.
- Give trick-or-treaters flashlights.
- Allow kids to only carry flexible knives, swords and
other props so they won't be hurt if they fall.
- Tell children not to cut across yards to avoid hidden
hazards like holes and clotheslines.
- Use retro-reflective tape and stickers on costumes and
bags.
- Kids should walk, not run.
- Remind children of safety issues concerning crossing
streets.
Have a fun and safe
Halloween!
